Find out moreWith the current increases in energy costs it is no surprise that the number of searches on Google about home insulation has hit an all time high, this particularly being the case in Scotland (as you may expect).
But where is most of the heat lost from your home? Well, all the data suggests that your roof and windows are the main culprits. But what can you do about it?
Other companies can assist you with insulating your roof space and with more efficient heating systems, but when it comes to heat loss through your windows and doors we know we can help you.
One of the easiest and cheapest ways to stop heat from escaping through your windows is to check whether or not you have adequate draught proofing. Draught proofing helps seal the gaps between the window and the frame. Some people have been known to use foam, silicone and even cardboard to stop the draughts and air loss caused by these gaps.
It does not look very good though..
However, as you can imagine, this can look pretty awful and is not something that we could suggest.
Instead, the best way you can stop these draughts is to replace the window, this not only preventing the heat loss from any draughts, it also gives you the opportunity to install double glazing and / or a different type of glass, one that can further reduce energy loss.
Replacing your old windows (and where necessary doors) will also improve the appearance of your home, something all owner-occupiers will appreciate.
However, if replacing your windows is a non starter, then maybe some repair work in order. This should reduce any heat loss whilst also dealing with important issues like rot and decay.
But for those who cannot, for the time being, replace or repair their timber windows, then there are some short term ways to reduce the heat loss from your windows.
Insulating film can reduce the heat loss by up to 90%, however, it can be unsightly and is easily damaged.
Changing your curtains for thicker, better-insulated ones will also reduce the heat loss simply by stopping the warm air inside your home from reaching the windows themselves. However, the downside of this is that you cannot really do this in the daylight hours.
Draught excluders can be very useful for both doors and windows. However, they can only be considered to be a short term fix, it being far better to have fully fitted doors and windows which will ensure your home is warmer and your heating bills are lower.
